It can be nice to have a dental implant. They can make strong foundations for things like dental crowns or bridges to rest on. Of course, implants may not last as long as they can if you neglect to take good care of them. Here are some ways you can care for the implants and your oral health as well.

We know you may roll your eyes when you hear this, but the rewards of brushing and flossing the implant-supported crown or bridge can be worthwhile. Plaque never gives up, and you can continue to clean it off this way. Implants usually involve a little more effort when it comes to flossing, but the extra effort can help you avoid gum disease and other problems. Flossing in the little gap between the implant and the crown or bridge can get rid of food and plaque trying to make a home there before they can cause you trouble.

Another thing that can go a long way in preserving your implant as well as your health is to avoid or quit smoking. Smoking can open the door to gum disease, which can weaken your gum tissue. Your jawbone can also lose its integrity if you have a smoking habit. Dental implants are rooted in the jawbone and need the support of the gums, so they can lose their own integrity if the bone or gums become compromised. So if you do develop a habit of smoking and have implants, you can help the implants last by quitting.
